To provide free or subsidized programs of adult English language instruction to parents or other members of the community who pledge to provide personal English language tutoring to California school children with limited English proficiency.
The CBET program is authorized under Education Code Section 315, and Title 5, California Code of Regulations, Section 11305. Funds to support services are allocated based on the number of limited English proficient (LEP) students identified in the Annual Language Census (Form R30-LC).
Merced City Schools will collaborate with Merced Adult Schools to provide sufficient qualified adult ESL teachers for the CBET program. Merced City School Student and Family Service Center will provide sufficient space for the establishment of adult ESL classrooms, language/computer labs, and tutoring environments. CBET funds will be used to provide up-to-date, state-of-the-art instructional materials, equipment, and furnishings. Funds will also be used to provide for both human and material resources to ensure effective supervision and monitoring of the adult instructional and student tutoring services.
