When it comes to providing primary language instruction in the Southeast Asian Languages, one of the biggest barriers is the lack of materials. Since May 1994, Merced City School District has initiated a humble effort to tackle this problem. Taking advantage of computer technology, the district has developed many high quality materials in exotic languages (such as Hmong, Lao and Mien). To date, the district has translated (with permission) several books from publishers (such as Houghton Mifflin and DC Heath). Additionally, Merced City School District has developed three original posters and books in all three languages, several books in only the Hmong language and 2 posters in Hmong and Mien. Some of the Hmong books have been set to music which can be purchased separately. In addition, four Hmong stories have been narrated on one video to assist children in their reading. (Two songs in Hmong are included)
These materials are being used throughout the United States where the respective languages are spoken. They are also being utilized as teaching tools in countries such as France, China, Thailand and Australia.
