Students from Charles Wright Elementary School had a chance to meet with City of Merced firefighters and even spray a fire hose during a fun and educational field trip Thursday morning.
The TK (transitional kindergarten) class got a tour of Fire Station 51 on 16th Street and learned about how the daily operations work. The group also watched a firefighter put on his protective gear to help ease any fears in case the students ever experience a fire, and they practiced the “stop, drop, and roll” technique. They learned what to do if they hear a smoke alarm, and they got a close up look at a variety of fire equipment before testing out the hose.
This extended learning opportunity ties into a social studies unit called “Helpers in the Community.” It also leads into National Fire Prevention Week, which is coming up October 9-15.
Students also had an extra learning opportunity by walking to and from the fire station. They practiced social skills, such as how to use a crosswalk and stay together as a group. They also observed nature along the way with the help of their teacher, principal, and parent volunteers.
Three kindergarten classes also enjoyed this same walking field trip. Two of them visited the fire station last week, and the third class visited Thursday afternoon.
Students at Stowell Elementary School in Merced took part in a patriotic sing-along Friday morning in honor of Constitution Day, which commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17th, 1787.
The songs included “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” and “This Land is Your Land.” Kindergarten classes even decorated their own red, white, and blue hats and waved American flags they made from colorful construction paper.
This musical tribute was the culmination of a patriotic themed week, led by third grade students at Stowell. They read inspirational quotes about America over the public address system each morning after reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Other Merced City School District campuses have also been taking part in patriotic activities, beginning with a 9/11 Day of Remembrance last Friday and leading up to Constitution Day. That includes Gracey Elementary, where students made a red, white, and blue "paper quilt" with the help of their teachers.
The Merced City School District proudly participated in this year’s “Cap & Town” street fair in downtown Merced on September 10th. The event was a celebration of academic excellence throughout our community.
Bands from Cruickshank, Hoover, and Tenaya gave skillful performances under the direction of their talented teachers and enjoyed a great response from the crowd.
The Cap & Town festivities also included a classic car show, food vendors, face painting, a bounce house, and booths showcasing Merced College and UC Merced. The Greater Merced Chamber of Commerce organized the even with support from the City of Merced, along with several generous community groups and businesses.
Our Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation staff also played an important role by setting up stages for all of the performers and providing a bus for our district’s “Fill the Bus” book drive. Volunteers from Merced Sunrise Rotary helped collect those book donations throughout the day, and our hardworking warehouse crew has been keeping them all organized so they can be sent home with students. This event truly was a team effort, and we would like to thank everyone who came together to make it possible!
